Services, Hours, and Locations

The Marian University Writing Center provides peer-tutoring services at locations across campus.

  • The primary Writing Center location is Clare Hall 021. This is where we do most of our work, like dive into essays, invite walk-ins and Writing Tutorial students, host informal conversations over coffee with faculty and guests, and sketch ideas on wall-to-wall dry erase boards or paper-covered tables.
  • Space is finite and schedules vary, so the Writing Center also hosts walk-in and by-appointment tutorials at the library, The Exchange, and (weather permitting) near the central fountain.

Services Available

Tutorials
Meet with student tutors in the Writing Center for face-to-face guidance during all stages of the writing process. Face-to-face tutorials are the preferred method of interaction as the personal interactions encourage dialogue and shared learning. Appointments are suggested but not required.

English Composition Lab and Writing Tutorial Instruction
For-credit classes are available for students who meet weekly with a dedicated lab hour instructor. Click here to learn more.

Late Night and Weekend Tutorials
Tutors are available during Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday evenings throughout the semester in the library. Walk-ins are welcome. During the weeks before mid-terms and finals, Writing Center tutors are often available for extended hours in the library.

Classroom Presentations
Writing Center student leaders and staff are available for 10-15 minute classroom presentations on utilizing the services of the Writing Center as a routine part of the writing process. To schedule a classroom visit, email Mark Latta.

Workshops
Throughout the semester, students and staff of the Writing Center offer a variety of workshops covering topics related to MLA/ APA formatting, personal statements, memoir writing, resumes, multimodal writing, and a variety of other topics. To learn about upcoming workshops, view our calendar.

Writing Center Outdoors
When the weather's nice, tutors may hold impromptu sessions in the great outdoors. Typical spots include the central fountain, the EcoLab's outdoor classroom, and the terrace outside Alumni Hall. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for notices about outdoor sessions!

Resume and Professional Writing Support
Tutors working in The Exchange are specially trained to help you with resumes, cover letters, and professional business writing.

Community Outreach
The Marian University Writing Center is open to the public and services are available to everyone. We are proud of our commitment to community engagement and public scholarship. We believe literacy, writing and education—formal or informal—play a vital role in working towards social justice and personal agency and writing centers have a central role within this effort. To this end, the Writing Center manages a number of off-campus writing support centers and works with a range of partners throughout Indianapolis to provide writing support.

Tutors are available at Flanner House Library and Eagle Branch Library on rotating Thursdays. Check our events calendar for more information. For more information, contact Demi Abbett, community outreach coordinator.

Public Tutorials
Services are available to the public regardless of whether they are affiliated with Marian University. Community members can visit the Center by making an appointment, walking in, or emailing us a draft of their essay. The service is available for youth and adults of all ages for all types of writing. We routinely work with public, private, and home-schooled high school students, adults seeking professional advice, incarcerated and recently paroled individuals, and those who need other advice about writing.
